Secrets of Lake Simcoe

Fascinating stories from Ontario's past

by Andrew Hind and Maria Da Silva

Secrets of Lake Simcoe tells fascinating stories associated with the lake’s evolution from an ancient Indigenous travel route and strategic fur-trade highway into today’s premier recreational playground.

Secrets of Lake Simcoe recounts the many fascinating stories associated with this iconic Ontario body of water. Long before it became a weekend haven for cottagers and boaters, Lake Simcoe was a vital lifeline—paddled by Indigenous nations, scouted by early French explorers, and fought over in the shadow of impending invasions.

The book highlights some of the most dramatic episodes from the region' s past, including maritime disasters, historical industry, infrastructure projects like the creation of the Holland Marsh, and famed and eccentric figures from its past and murder.

Illustrated with rarely seen archival photographs, this captivating collection will appeal to local history enthusiasts, tourists, cottage residents and locals, as well as those intrigued by true crime and mystery.

About the Authors

ANDREW HIND has a lifelong interest in history –especially for unusual or obscure events– and a deep passion for Ontario’s cottage country. He is the author of 40 non-fiction books and his feature articles have appeared in magazines and newspapers across Canada, in the United States, and in England.

MARIA DA SILVA has always had a passion for history and ghost stories. Though she came from a country (Portugal) that is full of history and the unknown, she never dreamed that her future would lead her into writing about the forgotten and the unexplained. Her work has appeared in publications such as Fate and Mystery Magazine.

"this book will resonate most with an audience from the Toronto/Barrie/Orillia area of Ontario. Its content generally matches Ontario's grade eight history curriculum"
