The Ontario Alternative Budget Papers

What We Need and How We Fund It

by Ontario Federation of Labour

The Ontario Alternative Budget Papers analyses neo-conservative slash-and-burn budgets of the late 1990s, offering humane, effective options for public finance.
Responding to the late-1990s reorganization of public finances by the Ontario Conservative government led by Mike Harris, this book presents alternatives developed by a coalition of unions and community-action groups brought together by the Ontario Federation of Labour.
Analyzing recent federal and Ontario budgets, the book is critical of the huge tax cuts charateristic of Harris' government, of NAFTA, the GST, high interest rates and public sector job cuts. The suggested alternative approaches to public finance in the province aim to rebuild fiscal capacity, fund needed programs and, at the same time, eliminate budget deficits.
