The Stowaway Piper
by Lilla Stirling
Caught as a Scottish stowaway on the Rose of Scotland-bound for the new world, will Dougal Donald be able to pay his way in another way?
Babpipes and Highland dress were forbidden by law in Scotland, so Dougal Donald Macdonald had to take his pipes and his kilt from their hiding place before he stowed away on the Rose of Scotland to search for his uncle in the New World.
Stowaways were said to bring bad luck to a ship, and when Dougal Donald was discovered in the vessel's hold, superstitious Jenny Martin demanded that he be thrown overboard. While all the other passengers stood gaping, it was Jeanie Maclean, the little lass to timid to climb a tree, who sprang forward to defend the young pipe and defy the captain.
When at last the Rose of Scotland dropped anchor off Nova Scotia, hostile Indians were waiting for the settlers. The Dougal Donald paid for his passage in a most astonishing way.
